I think David Weber is funniest when he’s not actually trying to write what he thinks of as humor. The man cannot write realistic character dialogue to save his life. How much of what passes for jokes in the series is two characters making some sort of sarcastic joke about an absent person or organization? And have you noticed the difference when it’s a side book written or cowritten by someone else?

That said, Honor’s mother talking about her XO’s cute butt - to her daughter’s despair - in her first “onscreen” appearance made me literally LOL.
